I’ve been out talking with people about Stockings for Seniors and it’s wonderful to see how enthusiastic everyone is about working with this project. I just wanted to explain a little about how it started and what we are trying to accomplish.

Last Christmas, my mother-in-law, Marlene Leeper was living near us at the Sunrise of McLean. Although Marlene had some diminished capacity due to several strokes, she still needed projects that were meaningful. She was not the bingo type. She needed to be needed. Coincidentally, I am the same way. Nothing excites me more than being needed. I also was looking for a way to make my Christmas more meaningful. I don’t have children and my husband and I don’t need any Christmas presents.

At the same time, I became aware of a need at Cameron Glen. Seniors on Medicaid in Virginia only get $40 a month for their personal needs. That does not go very far. I remembered a project I had done with a service organization where we stuffed Christmas stockings for people in need. I know that made me feel good.

So, I asked Cameron Glen how many stockings they needed and what they needed put on the stockings. Next, I bought the stockings and started asking everyone I knew to help me collect the things we needed: shampoo, soaps, lotions, powders, shower caps, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and socks. When the supplies came in, I took the stockings and the “stuff” over to the Sunrise of McLean and the seniors stuffed the stockings. It was great activity and they were grateful to be doing something meaningful and giving back to their community. We stuffed over 400 stockings last year.

Marlene passed away last February and I miss her terribly. But, this project is living on and I will think of her with each stocking I help stuff.

We have our first official board meeting since we incorporated Stockings for Seniors as a 501 (c) (3) and have received our Federal EIN. Soon, I’ll open a bank account and get set up to take cash donations. Right now – keep the stuff coming. We have many seniors who want to participate in stuffing the stockings and many seniors in need of the stockings. Email me with questions or suggestions: reston@comfortkeepers.com

Yesterday was an interesting day. Good Interesting. I was asked to blog for the Washington Post. That just came out of the blue for me. Really? I’m still trying to get my thoughts together. Here they are so far: Excited. How cool is that? The Washington Post. It would be great for Comfort Keepers, great for Stockings for Seniors, give me wonderful exposure and really help both my business and my charitable foundation. Well, if anyone actually reads it. Nervous. Can I write well enough that someone would actually read it? I tend to write like I talk, fast, slightly disconnected and little jumbled together. Is that what people want to read?
I’ve pretty much made up my mind that I’m going to do this. So, every day I’ll be blogging a little bit and see how it goes. I certainly have enough going on that I shouldn’t run out of things to write. Wish me luck!
